Program

The Third Technical Meeting on Science, Technology and Society Perspectives on Nuclear Science, Radiation and Human Health: The View from Asia, co-organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and in collaboration with Hiroshima University, Nagasaki University will be held from 23-24 June 2016 in Singapore. This forum completes a series of three technical meetings while setting the stage for future exchanges and events. Nagasaki University and Hiroshima University hosted the first and second meetings in November, 2014, and July, 2015, respectively. These dialogues seek to illuminate and develop practical responses to issues of human health, both physical and psychosocial, after a nuclear accident or disaster, through the discussion of insights and perspectives from the field of science, technology and society (STS). In addition to STS scholars from around the globe, speakers include many of the very physicians who have been helping residents of Fukushima Prefecture since March 11, 2011, as well as experts from cognate fields such as nuclear safety and disaster studies. These interdisciplinary experts address a range of specific, interlocking issues from science and risk communication to evacuation policy to the question of how to adapt medical education curricula to the needs of populations grappling with nuclear risk and uncertainty. As the capstone of a trilogy, this Third Technical Meeting will reflect upon lessons learned from the experiences of Fukushima and the dialogues of the previous meetings, while also setting the stage for future engagements. It will discuss practical interventions and identify next steps for exploring fruitful research and policy collaborations amongst a wider range of stakeholders. These stakeholders notably include experts, officials and residents of the Southeast Asian region, where the construction of new nuclear power plants is currently being planned and debated.
