How Can Engineered Systems Change Society?

The talk will define large scale engineering systems and then discuss how these large scale engineered systems have changed society. The Global Positioning System and its manifestation in society will be used as a specific example from recent years. The talk will then address how personal transportation systems are evolving with an emphasis on the work going on in the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology on autonomous vehicles to address the first and last mile issue as well as the impact of the collection of big data on transportation decisions. The talk will be followed by a tour of SMART and viewing of the autonomous vehicle.

Future Cities: Five Challenges

The planning, design and development of future cities present multiple challenges. Researchers from Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) will outline their work on five of these challenges through short presentations, demonstrations and discussions:

  1. Energy: sustainable urban energy systems and air-conditioning tropical cities
  2. Water: rehabilitation of rivers in megacities with particular reference to the Ciliwung River in Jakarta
  3. Mobility: diverse mobility flows and their interaction with dense urban fabric
  4. Climate: tackling urban heat island effects in Singapore
  5. Food: understanding urban-rural relationships for sustainable urbanisation

The talk will be followed by a tour of Future Cities Laboratory. Refreshments will be provided. Registration has closed as the event has reached full capacity.
